Dear Sirs,

The ratification of the Prespa Accord has put an end to a long period of controversy over the name of our neighbouring country, over the nationality of its inhabitants, as well as over the Modern Macedonian language, a language which is now officially recognized by this name by our country Greece.

Given that one of the purposes of your Department is the promotion and knowledge of the languages, of the history and of the cultures of the Balkan countries at university level, one would expect it includes all our immediate neighbourhood within the scope of its work. We hereby take the opportunity to ask you to introduce the Modern Macedonian language in the Curriculum of the Department, as it is spoken both in our neighbouring country and in Northern Greece.

Such a move will open up new opportunities both for the academic community and, of course, for all those who speak the Macedonian language as a mother tongue or as a second language, so that they can finally study it at university level. At the same time, it will stand testament in the most convincing way to an extroverted and inclusive University Department, one that is not afraid to go into areas previously seen as taboos in order to collect authentic data and make it available to students and society.

In our view, the academic world should not only precede social developments but, also, formulate them, showing independence, innovation and boldness. In this respect, we would highly appreciate if the Department approached this matter without the sterile national stereotypes often heard in the public debate so far.

Awaiting your positive response, we remain at your disposal for information and practical help you may wish to seek from us for the sake of materialising the project.
