EFA Rainbow requests the denomination of D.Avramopoulos for the Immigration & Internal Affairs position at the European Commission

The New Shape in the European Commission

ECA-Vinozito wishes to congratulate the new President of the European Commission Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker and the 27 new Commissioners, if of course their appointment gets the final approval of the European Parliament. Regardless of its composition, the new Commission will have a very hard task and surely it will need the assistance of all the pro-European forces within the EP to cope with everything.

At the same time, though, we have to highlight that failures have started way before the new Commissioners get approved and start their work. The most flagrant case is undoubtedly the appointment of Dimitris Avramopoulos who will be responsible for Immigration and Internal Affairs. A few of Mr' Avramopoulos' duties will include protection of minorities (sic!), the overall control of the Schengen Treaty, the protection of basic human rights and the fight against racism, xenophobia and homophobia.

For us, it is simply unthinkable that a former Greek minister who has served one of the longest terms in the recent 25 years, will be put in charge for the aforementioned field for the whole EU, given the fact that Greece remains at the absolute bottom of the "28" in terms of protecting diversity or combating racism and homophobia. The ultimate exponent of a country which officially has no ethnic or linguistic minorities will now come to protect them! The minister of several Greek governments which, for decades now, forbid the entrance to Greece for hundreds of Macedonians, even if they bear an EU passport, will now supervise the implementation of the Schengen Treaty! The person who, just a few days before travelling to Brussels, voted for the despicable new "anti-racist" Law which foresees even jail sentence to those who deny fictive "genocides" (voted as such by the Greek Parliament) and denies same-sex couples the right for a legally guaranteed common life, this person will now fight racism and homophobia!

No reaction of the usually very talkative Dimitris Avramopoulos was recorded when recently, one of his homophobic comrades attacked in a repulsive and unacceptable manner the prime minister of Luxembourg, a fellow citizen of Mr. Juncker. Instead, as a reward, Mr. Avramopoulos was appointed to the specific post. We understand, up to a certain extend, the agony of Mr. Juncker to somehow fit the Greek Commissioner into the new Commission but this cannot happen to the expense of the Macedonians in Greece and Bulgaria and millions of other EU citizens.

ECA-Vinozhito as an equal member of the European Free Alliance which, together with the Greens, forms the 4th biggest group within the European Parliament, demands the removal of Mr. Avramopoulos from this position. Should this not happen, we will propose to Greens/EFA a negative vote for the whole of the new Commission.

It is not possible nor least acceptable that a Greek wolf will guard the European sheep, and not only.
