Press Release by EBLUL (European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages)
February 25, 2009
The Greek Member State Committee of the European Bureau for Lesser-Used Languages (EBLUL) expresses its anger and disgust for the cold-blooded attack against the member of its Board Abdulhalim Dede, while talking live to a TV show.
Anger and disgust not only for this cowardly act but mainly for what caused and followed it. Abdulhalim Dede would be attacked anyway, no matter what he would say on TV, since the atmosphere, which was created recently in Thrace due to the opening of the branch of a Turkish bank, was explosive. It was skillfully prepared by the cheap bravados of the Thrace Region Secretary General and the reports of the local and national press, which again had been discovering the “ danger from the East” (Turkey).
The reference to the city of Komotini with its Turkish name (Gumulcine) in the invitation for the official opening sent by the bank, was considered by the official Greek state and the country’s bigoted press as another “provocation”. Therefore, the Greek public opinion should be properly “informed” about it and then react “spontaneously”.
Would the Greek society have a different perspective towards ethnic and linguistic diversity inside the country, if the state and the mass media would stop demonizing it and start presenting it as something positive, instead of using it all the time to invent Turkish, Macedonian or other plots against Greece?
Wouldn’t it all be very different if in the regions with minority population, the dual name inscriptions of cities or villages (Greek and Turkish, Macedonian, Vlach, or Arvanite etc.) was allowed?
What is really happening, instead, in today’s Greece is the conscious and systematic persecution of diversity and all of its entities and bodies, physical or legal. The official state, through its local civil servants nourishes an peculiar “seed of evil” and watches with satisfaction this “seed” germinating and injuring minority activists. The contemporary inspirers of this policy, who also insinuated the attack against Dede, should know though, that whoever sows winds will sooner or later reap turmoil (old Greek proverb).
