HUMAN RIGHTS SEMINAR IN ATHENS

Three members of the RAINBOW party and two members of the Home of Macedonian
Civilization participated in a human rights seminar organized by Greek
Helsinki Monitor and Minority Rights Group - Greece. The seminar took
place in Athens from January 29 - February 2, 2001.
In addition to the two Macedonian groups the seminar was attended by a wide range of organizations including participants from the Turkish National Minority, the Roma of Greece, as well as well as participants from Catholic, Protestant and Jehovah Witness groups. There were also participants from several Greek NGOs involved in human rights.
Within the framework of the seminar representatives of RAINBOW and the
Home of Macedonian Civilization had an chance to dialogue with the Greek
Ombudsmen about the possibilities for resolving the human rights obstacles
encountered by the Macedonian minority in Greece.
Allan Philips, former president of Minority Rights Group International, spoke at the seminar telling all to take advantage of the opportunities found within international organizations such as the United Nations, OSCE, the Council of Europe in order to further the cause of human and minority rights in Greece.
The representatives of the two Macedonian organizations also had an opportunity to present the circumstances and problems of the Macedonian minority to the other participants and exchanged views with them on how to further the democratization of Greek society.
