The European Commission declares Bulgaria is not fulfilling its democratic obligations November 11 2006
A letter written on behalf of President of the European Commission Mr. Barroso to EFA co-director Günther Dauwen clearly states that Bulgaria could be evaluated by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for not fulfilling its obligations as long as they do not register the party OMO Ilinden Pirin. “The European Commission is well aware of the judgment of the Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg as regards Bulgaria’s violation of Article 11 of the ECHR. The European Commission expects from every Member State of the EU full compliance with ECHR rulings”, the letter says. President of the European Free Alliance (EFA), Nelly Maes, condemns the lack of minimum guarantees for democracy in the Republic of Bulgaria. All possible leverages are used by the authorities to simply prevent a democratic and peaceful organisation to register as a political party On the 20th of October 2005 the European Court of Human rights condemned Bulgaria for denying the right of Omo ilinden Pirin to register. Instead of accepting the registration and paying the fine as the Court declared, Bulgaria used all kinds of undemocratic and dubious tricks to reject a new attempt to register the party. Bulgaria clearly fears to play the game of Democracy by the rules and falsifies the path of legal procedures. Nelly Maes, President of EFA, declared: “It is shameful that Bulgaria will enter the EU while it clearly proves to be unwilling to comply with the European Charter of Fundamental Human rights. We will write to the 46 Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Council of Europe member States requesting them to investigate this flagrant case of non-compliance.” Member of the European Parliament Bernat Joan I Mari commented: “I simply cannot understand that Bulgaria risks spoiling the historic moment of EU membership by showing the world there unwillingness to act as a (young) democracy.” Read the letter from the European Commission.
